Origami is a series of multi-faceted wooden trays which draw inspiration from the famous Japanese paper folding craft. Yuki is a large plate or small serving tray in lacquer and wood. The ‘toothed’ surface and subtly upcurving rims form the basis for a simple decoration in blue and white lacquer. Yuki was envisioned during a winter design session with international designers when Echizen was covering in a thick layer of snow. It is not hard to see that the shape of these small jewellery boxes are derived from one of the most recent sweets crazes in Japan: the macaroon. As macaroon specialty shops spread across Japan, the Echizen design team noticed how well its recognizable shape would work for a small box using traditional wood turning and lacquering techniques. Reflection Reflection is the name of large, lacquered panel which can be used as a tray, placemat or simple a decorative stand for vases or flower arrangements. Kako is the Japanese word for crater. The title was chosen because the work resembles the fiery mouth of a volcano and was coincidentally also made using fire. Another example of a unique collaboration between the craftsmen of the Echizen area: Kako was created in earthenware by ceramicist Mitsuo Kasatsuji and lacquered by the craftsmen of Tsujinao lacquer ware.
